MET Group marks milestone with 100th LNG shipment to Krk Terminal

MET Group has celebrated the arrival of its 100th LNG shipment to the Krk LNG Terminal in Croatia.

The Swiss-based energy group, alongside its local subsidiary MET Croatia Energy Trade, has been a key player in the Krk terminal’s operations from its inception.

“In addition to the 100th delivery, we are pleased that we had the opportunity to bring in the initial, ‘zero’ ship, planting a strong foundation for the future operations of the terminal,” stated Mario Matković, CEO of MET Croatia Energy Trade.

“We are proud to be one of the leaders in this important project, providing reliable energy solutions to end customers and the wholesale market, thereby fostering economic development.”

MET Group’s has leased regasification capacities at the Krk LNG Terminal under a deal lasting until October 2032.

The company operates LNG import structures all over Europe, with long-term regasification capacity bookings in Germany, Croatia and Spain.

Over recent years, MET has imported LNG into eight different countries, including those around the Mediterranean, Northwest Europe, and the Nordic region. In 2023 alone, the company delivered more than 30 LNG cargoes to Europe.

In 2023, MET Group reported a consolidated sales revenue of €24.5 billion ($27.2bn), with a total traded volume of natural gas amounting to 88 billion cubic metres (bcm) and electricity trading volumes reaching 68 terawatt-hours (TWh).

Europe’s LNG import infrastructure has grown in recent years as the continent seeks to diversify its energy sources and reduce dependence on pipeline gas, particularly from Russia.

As of 2024, Europe boasts over 30 large-scale LNG import terminals spread across countries like Spain, France, Italy, the Netherlands and the UK, with an increasing number of floating storage regasification units (FSRUs) to add flexibility.

In 2023, Europe imported approximately 155 bcm of LNG, a substantial increase from previous years, driven by the geopolitical landscape and the push for energy security. This surge in imports generated significant revenue, with the European LNG market valued at over €60bn ($66.6bn).

Major ongoing projects include expansions at Spain’s Barcelona terminal and new FSRUs in Germany, Finland and Poland, aimed at boosting capacity and reducing bottlenecks. The market is expected to grow further, with projections estimating a rise to over 200 bcm of LNG imports by 2030 as Europe continues to transition towards greener energy sources.
