Family-run industrial gases company Messer has joined the DEMO200 project, a project working to develop a superconducting high-current busbar.
Superconducting high-current transmission offers the potential for energy-efficient, ecological and economical power transmission in the gigawatt range of aluminium production, industrial electrolysis facilities and large data centres.
For the project, Messer will contribute an innovative new concept to generate the necessary operating temperature of 70 Kelvin (-203°C).
Messer’s concept is unique in that the cooling temperature is below the boiling point of liquid nitrogen (-196°C) and no pumps are required for heat removal.
