Messer invented specialist technology in RWE’s AmpaCity pilot project, for more efficient electricity transmission, which won a German Climate and Environment Innovation Award (IKU) 2015, last night.
Industrial gases expert Messer developed new cooling technology for the superconducting power supply cable used in the European company’s winning project.
Messer’s new chilling technology vaporises liquid nitrogen (N2) below atmospheric pressure and achieves temperatures of -209°C, 15°C cooler than previously thought necessary, and can facilitate electricity transmission through the cable with lesser wastage.
Superconductors are typically seen as a forward-looking solution for particularly space-saving and effective electricity transmission in towns and cities as well as in industrial facilities.
