MAN Diesel & Turbo’s turbomachinery unit is being shipped to South Africa following successful acceptance tests, to form the heart of Air Liquide’s air separation unit (ASU) in Secunda.
Once the facility is completed, which is currently scheduled for December 2017, Air Liquide’s site in Secunda will be the largest ASU in the world, producing 5,000 tonnes per day (tpd) of oxygen (O2).
Germany-based MAN will supply its AIRMAX technology to the project, which will be the biggest axial flow compressor to be used in an industrial application. Consisting of an AR140 main air compressor and an RG 71-4 booster compressor, it can attain an effective volume flowrate of over one million m3 of air per hour.
