Industrial gas major Linde has announced that it will partner with building materials conglomerate Heidelberg Materials (Heidelberg) to start up a large-scale carbon capture and liquefaction facility at its Lengfurt cement plant in Bavaria, Germany.
Cement is the most widely-used substance on Earth after water and – responsible for around 8% of global carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions – the cement industry is one of the most polluting manufacturing sectors.
Going by numbers alone, if the cement industry were a country, it would be the third-largest emitter of CO2 in the world, after the US and China.
By building a carbon capture plant at Heidelberg’s Lengfurt plant, the partners aim to capture, liquefy and purify around 70,000 tonnes of CO2 per year, with most of the resulting liquid CO2 to be marketed by Linde as feedstock for the chemicals and food & beverage end markets.
