Lhyfe signs five-year green hydrogen supply deal with H2 MOBILITY Deutschland

Green hydrogen producer Lhyfe has signed a five-year agreement with H2 MOBILITY Deutschland to supply over 1,200 tonnes of green hydrogen to four refuelling stations in Germany. This is Lhyfe’s first long-term supply deal in Germany for bulk green hydrogen.

The hydrogen will be produced from renewable power sources, qualifying as Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO), and will be sourced from Lhyfe’s planned production site in Schwäbisch Gmünd. This facility is set to become the largest green hydrogen production plant in Baden-Württemberg.

The first deliveries are expected to commence in 2025, with the hydrogen initially being supplied to stations in Ludwigshafen and Frankenthal. The agreement will eventually cover additional sites in the federal states of Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate.

Luc Graré, Head of Central and Eastern Europe at Lhyfe, commented on the agreement, saying, “This agreement is the realisation of Lhyfe and H2 MOBILITY’s shared ambition and common effort to make green hydrogen available in large volumes for the mobility sector, which is decarbonisation ready.”

“With a reliable hydrogen supply and the necessary refuelling infrastructure, this partnership enables a shift toward zero-carbon transport at a new scale for the region.”

H2 MOBILITY Deutschland, which operates hydrogen refuelling stations across Germany, aims to have a fully green hydrogen network by 2028.

Frank Fronzke, Managing Director and COO at H2 MOBILITY, stated, “Our objective is to have green hydrogen throughout the entire H2 MOBILITY Deutschland network by 2028.”

“We are pleased to announce that with the support of Lhyfe we are making significant progress towards achieving this ambitious goal. Green hydrogen is a crucial element in our mission to make the transport sector more environmentally sustainable.”

Currently, H2 MOBILITY operates around 80 public refuelling stations in Germany, capable of serving fuel cell vehicles at 700 bar pressure, including passenger cars and smaller commercial vehicles. The company is planning to expand this network further based on demand, including adding refueling options along the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T).

Since opening its first production site in 2021, Lhyfe has expanded its operations across Europe, with multiple sites under construction, including the Schwäbisch Gmünd facility, which aims to support Germany’s shift towards greener energy solutions in the transport and industrial sectors.

Green hydrogen and transport in Germany

Germany has been actively expanding its green hydrogen infrastructure as part of its strategy to decarbonise the transport sector.

Currently, there are approximately 100 hydrogen refuelling stations in operation across the country, with around 80 of these managed by H2 MOBILITY Deutschland, serving both passenger vehicles and commercial fleets.

Several other companies, such as Shell, TotalEnergies, and Air Liquide, are also investing in hydrogen refueling infrastructure, further boosting Germany’s capabilities.

As of 2023, Germany produces around 40,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually, primarily using electrolysis powered by renewable energy sources like wind and solar.

This production is set to increase significantly with the government’s National Hydrogen Strategy, which aims to install five gigawatts (GW) of electrolyser capacity by 2030.

The strategy includes substantial financial support and regulatory measures to encourage both the production and use of green hydrogen across various sectors, including mobility, industry and power generation.

Large-scale projects, such as the European Hydrogen Backbone initiative, aim to develop a hydrogen pipeline network across Europe.
