Lhyfe and Fives strike MoU to decarbonise industrial combustion with green hydrogen

Hydrogen production firm Lhyfe has teamed up with industrial combustion specialist Fives to advance the use of hydrogen in process industries without the modification of equipment.

The French duo today (4th July) announced a signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) focused on the complete decarbonised offer for industry, from hydrogen production to combustion.

Metal, glass, and cement industries will be the primarily focus on the effort, in addition to some selected industrial heating processes and applications in Europe and North America.

Matthieu Guesné, founder and CEO of Lhyfe, said, “We are in a pivotal period in the industrial sector and in industrial combustion. After several years of development, hydrogen solutions are now mature and available on the market regionwide.”

Hydrogen combustion emits no carbon dioxide (CO2) has emerged as one of the most promising solutions for reducing the carbon footprint of industrial processes.

What is the impact in numbers? Well, a secondary aluminium furnace that currently produces 120 tonnes per day using natural gas, would reduce its annual CO2 emissions by more than 4,000 tonnes with the use of hydrogen.

Frédéric Thrum, Deputy General Manager of Fives and President of the Energy Division, said that its combustion systems are developed to reduce the environmental impact of its customers globally.

In August 2023, Fives launched a 100% hydrogen duct burner to support the decarbonisation of heating and drying processes. The Hy-Ductflam™ is designed for new installations or to replace standard duct burners.

Emitting no CO2, the Hy-Ductflam™ can switch fuels from 100% natural gas to 100% hydrogen, without any changes made to the equipment.
