Large-scale green energy import terminal planned for Hamburg

Air Products and Mabanaft, through its Oiltanking subsidiary, have joined forces to develop a multi-million-euro green import facility at the Port of Hamburg to boost Germany’s hydrogen market.

Set to be operational by 2026, the location will offer strategic access to green ammonia from large-scale green hydrogen production facilities operated by Air Products and its partners around the world.

This ammonia will then be imported via the new import terminal and converted to green hydrogen at Air Products’ facilities in Hamburg, before being distributed to buyers across northern Germany.

The plans come as Europe strives to meet its REPowerEU goals of importing 10 million tonnes of renewable hydrogen by 2030, as well as boosting domestic production to 10 million tonnes.
