Global construction materials company CEMEX has signed a ‘ground-breaking’ agreement with European green fuels specialist ETFuels to develop a carbon utilisation project that aims to decarbonise the notoriously CO2-intensive cement production industry.
The project will see up to 450,000 metric tonnes of CO2 captured from CEMEX’s Alicante cement plant in Spain combined with green hydrogen to produce green methanol (e-methanol).
Methanol is considered one of the most practical alternatives to conventional fuels, as it can reduce carbon emissions in the transportation sector by up to 95% – an industry responsible for 37% of CO2 emissions in 2021.
By producing e-methanol using renewable energy, the partners aim to accelerate decarbonisation efforts in the cement production process and explore the potential for increasing European energy security.
