Keppel and Woodside advance hydrogen deal for Singapore data centres

Infrastructure company Keppel has advanced its hydrogen-powered data centre plans in Singapore, having signed an offtake term sheet for hydrogen supply with Australia’s Woodside.

Announced today (21st October), the deal follows a Heads of Agreement (HoA) signed between the two companies in April 2023.

The initial agreement referenced the potential purchase of approximately 1,000 tonnes per day of liquid hydrogen by Keppel Data Centres as early as 2030.

As a next step, the parties are likely to sign a binding offtake agreement for the supply of liquid hydrogen.

Hydrogen supplied under the deal would come from Woodside’s proposed hydrogen production facilities, including H2Perth.

Meg O’Neill, CEO of Woodside, described the news as a significant milestone.

“We are pleased to be working with Keppel on the potential for supply of lower carbon energy in the form of hydrogen to their data centres in Singapore.”

Keppel has confirmed plans for its Datapark+ project, a 1GW nearshore Net Zero data centre campus concept in Singapore. DataPark+ can be developed in phases in tandem with demand, and the availability of clean and low-carbon energy.

Currently, there are a few operational hydrogen data centres globally, including one from ECL and another from Microsoft.

Wong Wai Meng, CEO of Data Centres at Keppel, said, “As the energy transition unfolds, Keppel will continue to innovate and seek out like-minded partners to enhance and future-proof our data centres as we position ourselves to better serve our customers on their journeys to Net Zero.”

The Term Sheet remains conditional upon, among others, the negotiation and execution of a fully termed sales and purchase agreement and obtaining all necessary approvals.
