Japan energy trio team up to reduce CO2 in Malaysia

Japanese energy company Japan Petroleum Exploration Co., Ltd. (JAPEX) has signed up with JGC Corporation (JGC) and Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. (K Line) to explore the viability of carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology in Malaysia.

The study will investigate both suitable sites for carbon dioxide (CO2) storage and methods to capture and transport the gas from the Petronas LNG Complex in the Malaysian city of Sarawak, in addition to the possibility of transporting from outside the country. 

This will include the evaluation of CO2 storage technologies such as calculation of storage capacity and optimal storage methods, optimal capture and transportation options including estimation of emissions and capture volumes, as well as monitoring the method of CO2 storage underground. 

Having previously signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas), JAPEX is working with its energy partner to realise a ‘decarbonised society’ in Asia as underlined by the Asia Energy Transition Initiative (AETI).
