Iwatani Corporation has completed the first hydrogen (H2) refuelling station to be installed in a Japanese airport.
The station, which is the first of its kind for the North Pacific rim country, was installed in the Kansai International Airport, and utilises an offsite supply system of transporting liquefied H2 by tankers from the Hydro Edge Co, Ltd. – a liquefied H2 production plant owned by Iwatani situated in Sakai, Osaka.
The Japanese industrial gas company has built this new station as part of the ‘KIX Hydrogen Grid Project”, with the aim of becoming an environmentally advanced airport. Other initiatives in the project, which has been in effect from February 2015, include experimental programmes for fuel cell forklifts and further H2 supply systems in the international cargo area.
A press release from the company stated, “Although only one unit is currently being used in the experiment, the number of units will be gradually increased, and we plan to enhance our hydrogen supply capability in the future.”
