INOX Air Products to build dedicated hydrogen plant for glass facility

INOX Air Products (INOXAP) has commissioned its first green hydrogen manufacturing plant at the float glass facility of Asahi India Glass. The plant is in Soniyana in Chittorgarh, Rajasthan, in north-western India.

The glass manufacturer has agreed a 20-year offtake with INOXAP. The solar powered-plant will have capacity to generate up to 190 tonnes of green hydrogen annually through electrolysis, starting with 95 tonnes per annum.

It marks the first use of green hydrogen in the float glass manufacturing process in India.

Siddharth Jain, Managing Director of INOXAP, said the green hydrogen supplied would reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 1,250 mtpa.

Rupinder Shelly, COO of Architectural Glass at Asahi India Glass, said the long-term objective was to deliver 94% of the plant’s power requirements through low-carbon and sustainable energy sources.

Asahi India Glass has also commissioned a greenfield project in Chittogarh for manufacturing float glass, which is used for automotive and architectural purposes. That project is in collaboration with AGC Europe, a glass producer with a headquarters in Belgium.

INOXAP is India’s largest industrial gases producer. In January it commissioned India’s first ultra-high-purity nitrous oxide plant, with a capacity of 1,700 tonnes per annum, at Manali, Chennai.
