The resources-rich Middle East can draw on its energy history and nurture its drive to build partnerships to drive the hydrogen economy and energy transition, delegates attending today’s Industrial Gases in the Middle East gasworld webinar heard.
Dr. David Hart, Global Hydrogen Lead at ERM, set the scene by describing how decarbonisation is a common thread across the region, as elsewhere, and while there was a need to accelerate development, it was clear that hydrogen in particular presents a “fantastic opportunity” above and below ground.
“It’s not all about decarbonisation but also education, training, and building frameworks to develop hydrogen and its derivatives locally and overseas. No one region has all the pieces of the puzzle and it’s all about getting all the parts of the picture.”
While Saudi Arabia’s NEOM generates headlines, and work continues on the megaproject apace, Hart said it was clear that all Gulf states, underpinned by strong leadership, are stepping up their activity. The Kingdom recently trialled its first hydrogen-powered train as an example of work that is ongoing alongside the main projects.
