Indian steel-maker trials hydrogen injection in blast furnace

Indian steel-maker Tata announced that it has begun a trial involving the injection of hydrogen into a blast furnace at its Jamshedpur steel mill.

Tata will be running a 40 percent injection system into the ‘E’ blast furnace, a move which is intended to reduce CO2 emissions by reducing the amount of coke being burned.

Uttam Singh, vice president, Iron Making, Tata Steel explained, “This is the first time in the world that such a large quantity of hydrogen gas is being continuously injected in a blast furnace. We are confident that this trial will provide valuable insights into operating blast furnaces with hydrogen and help us identify the next steps towards achieving our goal of a leaner carbon future.”
