Big isn’t always better’ and ‘good things come in small packages.’ These familiar sayings could be applied to the liquefied natural gas (LNG) sector, where small-scale LNG technologies are both big business and often an optimal solution that allows for quicker speed to market.
Traditionally, LNG was primarily a means of transporting gas by ocean carriers to distant markets for power generation. But there have been revolutionary changes in the LNG distribution and transportation chain, making it feasible and economical to produce and distribute smaller-scale LNG parcels.
This change has seen a global explosion in the uptake of LNG, with wider accessibility and burgeoning applications allowing equipment crossovers for companies in the industrial gas industry. Small-scale LNG typically refers to production capacities of 750 tonnes per day (tpd) or under, while these plants and technologies tend to be standardised compared to mid and large-scale counterparts, all of which means there are benefits in synergy and standardisation.
