With a view to providing the latest technologies for neural repair and rehabilitation work on special needs persons in North East India, Guwahati-based HOPE, a multi-speciality rehabilitation and training centre, has started up a new Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) centre.
With its opening, citizens of the country’s North East can await the service in the region itself, rather than travelling to other cities.
HBOT was first introduced in India in 2001 for special needs children, by Dr Arun Mukherjee, of the Faculty of Medical Academy for Pediatric Special Needs in the US.
HBOT is a technique to administer higher than normal amounts of oxygen by placing a patient in a chamber and pumping in air, oxygen or both until the desired pressure is obtained. While historically used in the treatment of decompression sickness resulting from nitrogen gas bubbles forming in the blood, it has been shown to be beneficial in treating such conditions as strokes, Cerebral Palsy, Multiple Sclerosis, Down’s Syndrome and Rheumatoid Arthritis.
