Topsoe has been selected by developer Hygenco to provide its technology to an upcoming green ammonia plant in India.
The plant, scheduled to launch in 2027, is phase one (of three) at the 2,9700-acre Tata Steel’s Special Economic Zone Industrial Park (GIP) in Gopalpur, Odisha, and will have an installed capacity of 750 tonnes per day.
The technology will support Hygenco’s ambition of exporting green ammonia to the European market, aligning with the EU’s Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origini (RFNBO) regulations.
Elena Scaltritti, Chief Commercial Officer at Topsoe, said green ammonia plays a critical role in reducing greenhouse emissions from energy-intensive industries and long-distance transportation. “On a global level, we need to deploy decarbonization at scale, and Hygenco’s project will be able to deliver a solid contribution,” she said.
Amit Bansal, Co-Founder and CEO of Hygenco, said as the world seeks innovative solutions to tackle pressing environmental and energy challenges, Hygenco is making significant progress in advancing the energy transition and decarbonisation.
Ammonia – either in the form of low-carbon ammonia or as an e-fuel – is expected to play a critical role in the journey towards Net Zero: It can be transported using existing infrastructure; and it has multiple end-uses, not only as a fuel or hydrogen carrier but also to help decarbonise industrial processes like steel and cement production.
It marks the latest tie-up in India’s rapidly developing green ammonia space.
Last month BASF and AM Green signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to explore low-carbon chemicals production using renewable energy.
The co-operation includes a non-binding Letter of Intent for the offtake of 100,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually, produced from pump storage projects at AM Green’s plants.

It followed RWE Supply & Trading signing an MOU with AM Green Ammonia (AMG) for the long-term supply of green ammonia from its plants in India with deliveries slated from 2027.
It outlines the supply of up to 250,000 tonnes of green ammonia per year.
The ammonia will be sourced from AMG’s production sites in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh, and Tuticorin.
Initially, 50,000 tonnes of green ammonia will be produced at the Kakinada site, with the remaining volume to be sourced from Tuticorin.

Tata Steel Special Economic Zone signed an MOU with Avaada Group for a green hydrogen and green ammonia project at the Gopalpur industrial park in September, with a view to setting up a 0.5 mtpa production facility. A similar MOU was signed with ACME Clean Energy last year.
Elsewhere Topsoe has signed an agreement with Refinaria de Petróleo Riograndense SA (Riograndense), to provide its HydroFlex™ and H2bridge™ technologies for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable diesel production at Riograndense’s Rio Grande renewable fuels plant in Brazil.
At the end of August, Topsoe and partners Skovgaard Energy and Vestas inaugurated a new green ammonia plant in Ramme, Denmark.
