The hydrogen fuel cell bus trial taking place in Perth will come to an end in September as planned, according to the planning and infrastructure minister for Western Australia, Alannah MacTiernan.
The use of the 3 hydrogen fuel cell buses in the Transperth fleet is believed to have acted to prevent the emission of 300 tonnes of carbon since the trial started in 2004, while around AU$10m has been invested in the initiative by the state government.
“The trial of the clean green technology has resulted in a wealth of hydrogen related skills and expertise in the state government, academia and industry. It has also greatly increased public awareness of transport energy issues,” commented MacTiernan, describing the initiative as the “flagship” project for the Department for Planning and Infrastructure’s Sustainable Transport Energy Programme.
Similar trials have or are currently taking place in other destinations such as Hamburg, Stuttgart, Stockholm, Barcelona, Reykjavik and most recently in Beijing.
