Hydro-powered cars gain speed stateside

Hydrogen fuelled cars are gaining steam in the US, as SunHydro recently announced an agreement with Toyota Motor Sales, USA, Inc. (TMS) to supply 10 Toyota Advanced Fuel Cell Hybrid Vehicles in the Connecticut region over Autumn.
Tom Sullivan, Founder of SunHydro and Owner of Proton Energy Systems, responded to the news: “This is a big step for Connecticut, our country, and the overall evolution of alternative fuels in the U.S. We are very excited to partner Toyota on this initiative, which will help connect people with hydrogen fuel cell technology.”
The vehicles will support the recently built SunHydro solar-powered hydrogen fuelling station, which is located at Proton Energy Systems’ headquarters in Wallingford, Connecticut. Proton Energy Systems will be involved in supplying equipment to the SunHydro station.
Michael Grey, President of SunHydro, remarked, “We are looking forward to helping to lead the charge for solar-powered hydrogen fuel by building infrastructure that makes this alternative fuel more accessible to the general consumer.” SunHydro is promoting the development of an East Coast Hydrogen Highway, which it is hoped will enable drivers to travel from Maine to Florida using a fuel cell vehicle. The Connecticut station is the first to be constructed along the proposed highway, but once complete the highway series of stations will constitute the world’s first privately funded network of hydrogen fuelling stations.
Toyota has undertaken the contract as part of its nationwide fuel cell demonstration program which will place over 100 vehicles across the States over the next three years. The 10 fuel cell cars will be distributed across Connecticut and will be used by SunHydro and Proton Energy Systems staff, as well as other community members. Craig Scott, TMS advanced technology vehicle Manager, stated, “The FCHV-adv demonstration program is a key step in preparing the market for advanced technologies. The placement of the fuel cell vehicles in the Connecticut market will increase awareness of fuel technology and spur development of much-needed infrastructure prior to our planned market introduction in 2015.”
