Pressure is mounting on US President Joe Biden after the House of Representatives voted against the LNG export approval pause (224 to 200).
The ‘Unlocking our Domestic LNG Potential Act of 2024’ bill, designed to repeal restrictions on the export and import of natural gas, must now pass the Senate, and be signed by the President, before it can become law.
Commentators say the bill faces an ‘uphill battle’ to pass the Senate, but the bill’s passing in the House of Representatives sends out a clear sign of the importance of LNG to the US economy, and acknowledges the reaction that the controversial decision caused.
The US industry was left reeling by the sudden decision from the Biden-Harris administration, together with the DOE, to halt new export approvals. The Center for LNG described it as a ‘short sighted and damaging action’.
