The global helium market is in a new, more regional phase, with increased supply – and the likeliest scenario is for plentiful supply for the rest of the decade and beyond.
The assessment was made by Phil Kornbluth, of Kornbluth Helium Consulting, in his keynote address to 350 delegates at gasworld’s Helium Super Summit 2024 in Houston.
“Periods of tight supply should be transitory from here,” said Kornbluth. “The supply chain is still fragile and could still be subject to disruption, but the risk is lessening. If Gazprom’s Amur Gas Processing Plant starts up all three plants in the years ahead, and the fourth Qatar helium facility comes onstream, we are looking at global helium supply capacity soon being 50% higher than it has been in recent years.”
Kornbluth suggested that today’s conditions, and the future prospects, would likely have an impact on helium exploration projects in North America and elsewhere in the next few years.
