The helium market is rife with opportunities on a truly global level. As prices increase, players are beginning to look at the opportunities in North America, Southeast Asia and Africa. However, once a source of helium is identified, some of the biggest challenges in the specialty gas industry lie in its recovery and purification.
Speaking during gasworld’s webinar ‘Speciality Gases: Innovations and Applications’, Udo Dengel, Director of Membranes at Evonik, said, “The technical solutions can become quite challenging at times. So you need to pay attention to the engineering solution and how you monetise that helium stream.”
He added that simply having a helium source will not be enough and focus has to be maintained on the engineering solution before handling the offtake of helium.
Evonik works to provide the core of the technology for engineering solutions currently being developed with OEMs for helium recovery.
