Helium prices settle but uncertainty persists

Recycling, funding and cryogen-free tech are increasingly in the helium spotlight.

The latest helium supply crisis, dubbed ‘Helium Shortage 4.0’, originated in 2022 after 16 years of recurring shortages. A series of unanticipated events such as explosions, fires and outages impacted recovery of the market following the launch of Gazprom’s Amur facility.

After a brief start-up of the Amur facility, a fire in October  2021 was followed by a serious explosion in January 2022 which delayed the Amur facility entering the market until December 2023.

This year has seen the market return to some equilibrium, with reports that supply shortages were ‘over’ in June, although it remains precarious.
