Helium exports from the US to Europe look likely to be disrupted in the days ahead by a US dockworkers strike that began from midnight across the country.
The International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA), which represents 45,000 dockworkers, is pushing for a 77% pay increase over six years. There were negotiations on Monday (30 September) between a group representing port employers and union representatives, with offers and counter offers traded, but no agreement was reached.
The United States Maritime Alliance raised its offer of a wage increase to 50% over six years, up from an earlier offer of 40%, along with improved benefits.
The union is holding out for an increase of 77% in wages over six years as the baseline for negotiations, it has been reported.
