Construction has begun on a pilot carbon capture installation at Heidelberg Materials’ plant in Devnya, Bulgaria – a move that will showcase the scalability of the company’s OxyCal capture technology.
According to Heidelberg, the pilot unit – named ANRAV.beta – will represent a key step in the development of Eastern Europe’s first full-chain carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) project.
The company’s technology is based on the addition of pure oxygen to the clinker burning process resulting in a carbon dioxide (CO2)-rich flue gas that can be either reused or stored.
