In a bid to accelerate its journey towards carbon neutrality, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI)) is venturing into Korea’s largest carbon capture and storage (CCS) initiative.
The shipbuilding division affiliate of HD Hyundai has officially inked a preliminary basic design contract with Hyundai Engineering & Construction for a pioneering carbon dioxide (CO2) subsea underground storage platform.
The move comes as part of the ambitious ‘Donghae Gas Field Utilisation CCS Project,’ spearheaded by the Korea National Oil Corporation and Hyundai Engineering & Construction.
The primary goal of this undertaking is to advance Korea’s National Greenhouse Gas Reduction Target (NDC) by capturing and channelling 1.2 million tons of CO2 emissions annually from domestic industrial complexes to the East Sea Gas Field.
