Hawaii gas, the only regulated gas utility on the island, recently issued a Request For Proposal (RFP) from local and national suppliers to purchase renewable natural gas (RNG) and green hydrogen.
The move is in line with the utility’s clean energy plan and long-established track record for using low-carbon resources. The company has been exploiting RNG produced at the Honouliuli Wastewater RNG facility since 2018 and has been running on a blend of 15% hydrogen-to-gas since the 1970s.
The company claims that this extensive experience puts the utility 50 years ahead of mainland gas companies when it comes to blending hydrogen into their gas distribution supply.
