British airline Virgin Atlantic (Virgin) will today (28th Nov) take part in the first ever long-haul test flight using 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).
Powered purely by clean jet fuel and equipped with Rolls Royce Trent 100 engines, the widebody Boeing 787 took off at 11:49GMT today from London Heathrow and will touch down at New York’s JFK airport later today as part of Virgin’s Flight100 project.
The flight marks a milestone for aviation – an industry that is only permitted to use a blend of 50% SAF, a low carbon fuel made from a range of feedstocks including cooking oil, plant oils, municipal waste, waste gases and agricultural residues.
