Germany is set to host Alstom’s Coradia iLint, a new carbon dioxide (CO2) emission-free train that will eventually replace Europe’s many diesel-powered trains that are still in wide use, despite numerous electrification projects across the continent.
The train is powered by hydrogen fuel cells that produce electrical energy and emit only water vapour and steam.
Alstom is one of the world’s first railway vehicle manufacturers to have developed a passenger train using this technology.
“Alstom is proud to introduce a breakthrough innovation in the field of clean railways that will complement its Coradia range of regional trains. This innovation shows that we are able to develop in close cooperation with our customers a train in just two years,” said Henri Poupart, Lafarge, Alstom Chairman and CEO.
