Plans to develop a multi-cavity storage facility with a total capacity of up to 1TWh of hydrogen in Lower Saxony, Germany, have been unveiled by Gausine and Storag Etzel.
The deal marks the next step in Gasunie’s ambition to develop hydrogen storage capacity. As part of the agreement, the energy company will evaluate the feasibility of the site.
Since January 2023, Gasunie and Storag Etzel have been collaborating on H2CAST, a pilot project that is testing hydrogen storage in two existing caverns in Etzel, Germany.
Before injection into a storage cavern, hydrogen must be both purified and compressed.
