Produced gas volumes will overtake oil for fields coming onstream in the coming year, according to Wood Mackenzie research.
Around 3 million boe/d of new supply is coming from new fields starting up in 2024 across 50 countries. Gas will make up over 60% of these new volumes, with most production coming from Russia, the Middle East, Africa and the Americas – and more than half the appraisal drilling in 2024 will target gas, it reports.
On its radar are over 20 key appraisal wells. Most seek to confirm advantaged low emissions gas within economically viable fields. More than half (54%) will be drilled in energy super basins or potential energy super basins where the hydrocarbon is co-located with clean power and CCS potential.
