The first artificial cornea transplant has been carried out in England – and gas played a key part in its success.
Patient Cecil Farley, 91, from Chobham in Woking, had no vision in his right eye.
The corneal implant, performed at Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust (consultant ophthalmologist Thomas Poole, pictured left), involved removing the abnormal inner lining of the cornea (endothelium), and replacing it with an artificial cornea, rather than a donated human one.
