Semiconductor manufacturers GlobalFoundries and STMicroelectronics have concluded an agreement to jointly build, own, and operate a new €7.5bn high-volume semiconductor manufacturing facility in Crolles, France.
The duo first announced the plans in July (2022), with the signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to create a 300mm semiconductor manufacturing site adject to ST’s existing 300mm facility in the French commune.
It is hoped the facility will ramp to full capacity by 2026, with up to 620,000 300mm wafter year production at full buildout. The site will support several technologies, in particular DS-SOI-based technologies, and will cover multiple variants.
In support of the factory, Margrethe Vestager, Executive Vice-President of the European Commission said that GlobalFoundries and STMicroelectronics will benefit from public funding.
