Freeport LNG starts up Texas liquefaction site eight months after explosion

Freeport LNG Development has received regulatory approval to restart commercial operations at its Texas-based liquefaction facility, following an explosion that put operations at a standstill for eight months.

The authorisation allows for the immediate full start-up of one liquefaction train and the incremental restart and full return to service of a second train. Restart and turn of the third liquefaction train will require its own regulatory approval once certain operational conditions are met.

On 8th June 2022 an incident occurred at the Freeport LNG liquefaction plant on Quintana Island, Texas that resulted in the release of LNG, leading to the formation and ignition of a natural gas vapour cloud, and a fire at the facility.

The incident occurred in pipe racks that support the transfer of LNG from the facility’s LNG storage tank area to the terminal’s dock facilities located on the intracoastal (i.e., north) side of Freeport LNG’s dock basin.
