In preparation for the future hydrogen economy many of us are expecting, the US’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is working to develop standards, methods and measurements regarding hydrogen in the marketplace.
Under an interagency agreement signed in August, the US Department of Energy (DOE) asked the NIST to intensify efforts to develop the standards, test procedures and test methods needed to buy and sell hydrogen in the marketplace as easily as petrol, diesel and other fuels are dealt with today.
Accurate measurements and standards are critical to US development and implementation of the new technology, where such requirements are necessary in almost every stage of hydrogen production, distribution and sales.
NIST and the DOE are sponsoring a US National Work Group for the Development of Hydrogen Measurement Standards meeting in Gaithersburg, Maryland, on 3rd & 4th October, where participants will lay a foundation to develop a comprehensive set of commercial hydrogen measurement standards that include gaseous and liquid measuring devices and fuel quality standards.
