ExxonMobil has signed a deal with CF Industries to transport and store up to 500,000 metric tonnes per annum of captured carbon dioxide (CO2) from the fertiliser manufacturers complex in Yazoo City, Mississippi.
A signed carbon capture and storage (CCS) agreement will help CF Industries to reduce the site’s CO2 emissions by around 50%, with sequestration set to begin in 2028.
CF Industries will invest around $100m in the Yazoo City complex to build a CO2 dehydration and compression unit to enable up to 500,000 metric tonnes of CO2 generated as a byproduct of the ammonia production process and subsequently captured to be transported and stored.
Once sequestration by ExxonMobil has commenced, CF Industries expects the project to qualify for tax credits under Section 45Q of the Internal Revenue Code, which provides a credit per metric tonne of CO2 sequestered.
