European developer CycleØ to invest in 30 Spanish biogas plants

CycleØ, the European biogas developer, has announced plans to invest €200m to build up to 30 biogas plants in Spain, with a combined renewable natural gas production capacity of 800GWh.

The investment will create enough gas generation capacity to meet the needs of approximately 123,000 households. It will also help fill the 75% gap in renewable gas production compared with the target of 10.4GWh stated in country’s 2022 biogas roadmap.

CycleØ already has three plants operating in Lleida, Catalonia in Spain, plus a grid injection point. FNX, the 100% owned subsidiary of the company, is based in Artea in the Basque country, where the company’s upgrading technology is manufactured.

CycleØ CEO Laurence Molke said “We know there is a significant gap in biogas and biomethane generation capacity in Spain and we are investing now to help fill that gap.”

Spain currently has nine biomethane plants. That compares with 675 plants in France, 254 in Germany, and 133 in Italy. There are more than 1,500 biomethane plants across Europe.

The investment of €200m will see CycleØ:

  • Build up to 30 biogas plants, with liquefaction technology to convert the gas into biomethane. The plants will range from small to medium-sized.
  • Generate renewable natural gas from agri-food and industrial waste, which will then be upgraded for injection into the Spanish gas grid or liquified for transport.
  • Create additional grid injection points to inject the upgraded gas directly into the Spanish gas grid.
