Soaring gas prices, ever tightening margins in ammonia markets, temporary plant closures, maintenance downtime; these are all major factors that have been – and continue to be – contributing to an increasingly volatile carbon dioxide (CO2) market.
Despite this, these challenges present new opportunities for the entire breadth of the CO2 supply chain, including traditional industries such as the ammonia market and nascent sectors such as carbon capture and biogas upgrading.
Delivering the opening keynote for gasworld’s Europe CO2 Summit 2023, Eduardo Gil Elejoste, President of Nippon Gases Europe, quoted the rhyme of the ancient mariner, “’Water, water everywhere, nor any a drop to drink’, which relates to sailors dying of thirst while surrounded by water,” likening it to the current CO2 climate.
“CO2 seems to be everywhere, but not in a form that we can reliably use,” he said.
