Essar Energy Transition (EET) has unveiled plans to develop what it believes to be Europe’s first hydrogen-ready combined heat and power plant (CHP) at its Stanlow refinery in the UK.
Set to be operational in 2027, EET Hydrogen Power will be developed in two phases to reach a capacity of 125MW of power with 6,000 tonnes per day of steam. Hydrogen will replace hydrocarbons at the site for a reduction of 740,000 tonnes of CO2 per annum.
The new plant will replace the existing boiler units at Stanlow, which currently generate around 50MW of power for refinery operations. By retrofitting the plant and cutting its emissions by 95%, EET hopes to make it the world’s lowest carbon refinery.
Tony Fountain, Managing Partner of Essar Energy Transition, said, “Launching EET Hydrogen Power shows the progress that Essar Energy Transition is making in delivering against its commitment to put the UK at the forefront of low-carbon energy.”
