EHA encourages hydrogen initiatives

Ian Williamson, President of the European Hydrogen Association, responded to an MP’s urgent environmental call to government.
Chair of the Energy and Climate Change Committee, Tim Yeo released a pamphlet, “Green Gold”, during which he calls on the Government to charge drivers for emissions from their vehicles. His suggestion hoped to aid transition to a low carbon economy.
Williamson responded, “Mr Yeo should be congratulated for taking such a proactive position so early on in his tenure as chair of the Energy and Climate Change Committee. Measures that would both incentivise people to drive low carbon vehicles and raise money could very rapidly accelerate the transition to a low carbon transport infrastructure. Hydrogen powered vehicles will soon be commercially available in the UK, but public investment is needed if we are to create the infrastructure that will make it practical for people to buy them.”
He continued, “Hydrogen battery hybrid vehicles will be key to creating a low carbon transport infrastructure throughout Europe because, unlike pure electric vehicles, they offer consumers the same range, speed and fuelling times of conventional vehicles. In the last weeks of the previous parliament the Energy and Climate Change Committee called on the Government to invest more in hydrogen technology and the proposals put forward by Mr Yeo, could make this investment possible.”
