Following meetings that Trade Minister Antonis Paschalides is thought to have held in Cairo last week, it is rumoured that Egypt may supply Cyprus with LNG by 2013.
Cyprus, a heavy user of gas and oil, is keen to start using the commodity on the island over the next five years as an alternative to fuel its power grids.
The Cairo meetings followed a ministerial decision in June for the purchase and supply of natural gas to Cyprus and an invitation from the Petroleum Minister of Egypt, Sameh Fahme.
During the meetings in Cairo, Paschalides referred to recent decisions by the Cyprus government on the work of the Energy Centre, stressing the importance of importing natural gas to Cyprus.
