Amid the stillness of the Arizona desert this month, Nikola Motor Company will offer a glimpse of what it believes is the future of freight transportation.
The Utah-based start-up manufacturer of hydrogen-powered Class 8 Semi trucks is holding two days of unveilings and demonstrations at WestWorld in Scottsdale, after taking $14bn in pre-order reservations for its vehicles.
Nikola and its CEO Trevor Milton are competing with Elon Musk, founder of California electric vehicle maker Tesla, to decarbonize road transport. Musk has been chief cheerleader in opposition to hydrogen energy enabling zero emission road transport, describing it as “fool cells”, and Tesla has its own electric trucks with production reportedly planned for next year.
