UK-based energy firm Drax has awarded engineering services company Worley a services contract for the first two carbon capture units at its power station in North Yorkshire, UK.
Under the contract, Worley will provide pre-FEED (front-end engineering and design) services for the carbon capture units, which will be integrated into the biomass generating units that have a total capacity of 2,580MW.
The carbon capture units will incorporate negative emissions technology, Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS), generating renewable electricity while permanently removing carbon dioxide for the atmosphere.
BECCS have been successfully piloted by Drax at each carbon capture unit and is expected to capture approximately four million tonnes of carbon dioxide annually.
