Certification specialist DNV is collaborating with three energy companies to address potential safety hazards that may arise during or after the deployment of energy transition technologies such as carbon capture and storage (CCS) and hydrogen and ammonia usage.
By leading three parallel joint industry projects (JIPS) with companies actively involved in the development of cutting edge ‘green’ technologies, DNV hopes to further develop its KFX computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software which is designed to increase safety and mitigate risks associated with hazards such as gas dispersion, fire and explosions.
The first JIP is a partnership with Equinor, TotalEnergies and DNV and focuses on the consequences of the accidental release of CO2 relative to its environment. The second JIP will see Equinor and DNV exploring the consequences of low storage temperatures, dispersion, fire and explosivity for hydrogen.
With hydrogen considered to play one of the most important roles in the future energy mix, the versatility of the gas is also met with a range of challenges, including storage and its inherent explosiveness.
