Cryogenic nitrogen supply contract agreed

0

German industrial gas specialist Gase.de Vertriebs-GmbH has signed a contract to supply cryogenic nitrogen to the Institute for Aircraft Propulsion Systems (ILA) at the University of Stuttgart.

The Hessen-based industrial gas producer will supply 1 million kg of nitrogen per year, over a period of 5 years, and is also supplying the on-site tank system and piping.

Cryogenic nitrogen is being used to simulate polar air n a turbine test rig at the institute, with the nitrogen needed for the operation of an air cooler that produces cold dry air chilled to a temperature of -90oc.

The turbines are being tested under arctic conditions to check their reliability for take-offs at the North and South Pole and almost 300 tonnes per hour of liquid nitrogen is required to fill the test rig with freezing cold air.
