Canadian energy company Condor Energies has signed its first liquefied natural gas (LNG) framework agreement with Kazakhstan to support the fuelling of new and converted LNG-powered locomotives.
An agreement signed between Condor Energies and railway operator Kazakhstan Temir Zholy National Company JSC, along with locomotive manufacturer Wabtec Corporation will support displacing diesel with LNG as a fuel in locomotives.
In addition to reducing emissions, it is thought that the introduction of LNG will also reduce costs and increase the speed of railing freight across Kazakhstan by increasing operating ranges, reducing transit times, and lowering fuel and maintenance costs.
The agreement has been described as “critical” in supplying a stable, economic, and more environmentally friendly fuel source for the Transcaspian International Transport Route (TITR) expansion, which is currently the shortest, fastest, and most geopolitically secure transit corridor for moving freight between Asia and Europe.
