Commercial carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) opportunities are being explored at Texas’ Port of Corpus Christi, with a newly formed partnership unveiling ambitious plans to sequester between six and ten million metric tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) annually.
Talos Energy and Howard Energy Partners on Monday (1st March) said they have joined forces with the Port of Corpus Christi Authority to pursue the ambitious plans and, ultimately, mature the CCS project solutions on the port-owned land.
It is hoped that the Coastal Bend Carbon Management Partnership will greatly help the major strategic export hub, accounting for over $200bn of economic impact from approximately 7,000 vessel shipments annually, and showcase exactly what carbon capture technologies can achieve in highly polluted locations.
Under project plans, the group initially hope to evaluate 13,000 acres of land for the planned CCS developments. With this, it is hoped one to one and a half million metric tonnes of CO2 will be sequestered into saline aquifers.
