Carburos Metálicos, the wholly owned Spanish subsidiary of Air Products, has been awarded with the best environmental initiative accolade for its carbon dioxide (CO2) recovery project in Telde, Gran Canaria.
Carried out in collaboration with nearby glass factory, Vidrieras Canarias, The European Industrial Gases Association (EIGA) awarded the Air Products subsidiary with the EIGA Environmental Award 2016 for the scheme.
The initiative has been running since 2014, with the CO2 produced from Vidrieras Canarias’ site captured and transported by pipeline to Carburos Metálicos’ Telde unit, where it is then purified, liquefied and stored.
Besides its own environmental value, this project…demonstrates that taking care of the environment is compatible with maximising productivity
As a direct result from this initiative, the plant has completely stopped burning fuel oil and has saved approximate 8,000 metric tonnes per year of CO2 being released into the atmosphere.
