Carbon capture technology specialist CarbonQuest has partnered with carbon dioxide (CO2) mineral storage operator Carbfix to advance distributed carbon capture and storage (DCCS) in hard-to-abate facilities in North America.
Under terms of a signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), the partners will look to develop onsite CCS projects for industrial and manufacturing facilities with both new and existing applications.
To do this, CarbonQuest and Carbfix will unite their respective technologies.
CarbonQuest’s DCCS technology allow of CO2 capture in space-constrained settings. It is suitable for most industrial facilities, utility infrastructure, and campus settings with onsite power generation.
Focusing on the storage aspect, Carbfix’s technology dissolves CO2 in water and injects it into porous basaltic rock formations where natural processes cause the CO2 to form stable carbonate minerals within two years.
The company currently captures and mineralises around one-third of the CO2 emissions from Iceland’s largest geothermal power plant and hopes to increase this rate to 95% by 2025.
Shane Johnson, CEO of CarbonQuest, said he hopes the partnership will accelerate the adoption of carbon capture throughout North America.
According to the Global CCS Institute, as of March 2024, in the Americas there were 260 CCS facilities in development, 10 in construction, and 24 in operation.
A lot of these projects in the US have been supported byy policy and incentives. Following the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) being signed into law, around 370 facilities in the US have been added to the global pipeline project. These are expected to capture nearly 180 MtCO2.
CCS has been identified as a critical component of the EPA’s final rules for carbon emissions reductions from fossil fuel power plants.
Edda Aradóttir, CEO of Carbfix, said she particularly sees potential for carbon mineralisation in a variety of business scenarios from co-location or mineralisation hubs.
The news follows Carbofix earlier this week announcing a separate agreement with European carbon capture specialists Nuada to develop integrated carbon capture and storage (CCS) solutions for industrial emitters.
